COVID-19 Exposure Guidance

If you believe you have been exposed to a patient or colleague with confirmed or presumptive COVID-19, or have symptoms of COVID-19, please follow these steps:

  • Notify your supervisor
  • Notify Infection Control/Employee Health at your hospital or facility
  • They will document and may send you a questionnaire

    • For other locations: Contact the facility Infection Control/Employee Health Dept/Point Person
  • If you have symptoms, please contact the Tulane School of Medicine Wellness/Occ Med Clinic:

    • A provider will screen you by phone or televisit
    • Drive-thru testing may be offered depending on your symptoms, availability of testing supplies and your job priority

  • If you are sick, please put on a regular surgical mask and go home, or stay home pending evaluation
    • Please see attached guidance for home care, infection prevention at home and isolation measures
  • Return to Work (RTW):
    • Handled on a case-by-case basis
    • Must be cleared by your facility Employee Health/Occ Med and Tulane Occ Med
    • See attached guidelines for RTW based on exposure status and infected status, as well as hospital


  • Most common:
    • Fever
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath
  • Less common:
    • Sore throat
    • Muscle aches and pains
    • Headache
    • Diarrhea
    • Abdominal discomfort
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Loss of taste and/or smell
